World Business Chicago tracks indicators from month to month to gauge the strength of several aspects of Chicago’s economy, including employment in major sectors, residential and office real estate data, price and purchasing indexes, and freight demand. Note: employment data refers to payroll job estimates for the city of Chicago and is not adjusted for seasonality.

Key trends evident this month include:

  • Venture capital investment in Chicago (metro) increased by 25.8% year-over-year. In Q4 2015, $553.8M was invested in regional enterprises, compared to $440.2M in Q4 2014.
  • The number of patents issued in Chicago (city) increased by 15.9%. 124 patents were issued in January 2015, compared to 107 in January 2014.
  • The number of business establishments in Chicago (city) increased 3.5%, from 73,857 in 2014 to 76,474 in 2015.
