Internships not only give students the opportunity to build a professional network of references, they also allow students to apply classroom knowledge and explore career paths through hands-on learning. In today’s highly competitive job market, students need to find ways to stand out.
As employers point to internship experience as one of the most important factors they consider when recruiting, recent graduates can look directly to Chicago’s business community for internship opportunities that translate to college credit, invaluable work experience, and salary boosts. (UIC students with internships earned salaries averaging 11 to 19 percent higher than their colleagues without internships).
According to BusinessWeek’s 2010 undergraduate business schools survey, more than 1,400 companies posted internships on job boards at DePaul University, Loyola University Chicago, and the University of Illinois at Chicago during the previous academic year, with weekly compensation ranging from $140 to $520. Top recruiters in Chicago included UBS, Deloitte, Target, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, and Bank of America.
