Chicago Launches Digital Media Recruiting Tool

World Business Chicago (WBC) is targeting talented college graduates by launching the new digital media project, "Cooler by the Lake." The CD highlights Chicago's benefits as a thriving business community with an outstanding quality of life through video, dynamic visuals and extensive information about the City, set to a soundtrack of Chicago-based bands.

The free CD, designed to convince college seniors and first-year graduate students from across the country to begin their careers in Chicago, will serve as a recruiting tool for local companies. WBC representatives will also distribute the tool at career fairs throughout the country.

The project is intended to help the City attract the highly coveted 25- to 34-year old demographic, who research says is essential to compete in the global knowledge economy. This group, also referred to as the Millennial generation, is highly mobile and essential to cities in strengthening downtowns through job growth.

"In order to stay competitive in today's global economy, we need to have a strong and educated workforce," said Mayor Richard M. Daley. "By continuing to attract young talent to our city, we are also building and maintaining a strong economic future for our residents."

Chicago has seen the effects of talent driving downtown growth, with companies including Motorola, CDW, Wrigley and NAVTEQ all opening or expanding innovative offices in the City due to its talent.

"The emergence of CDW Plaza reflects our growing presence in downtown Chicago, where we have had great success recruiting and developing talent," said John A. Edwardson, chairman and chief executive officer of CDW, at a press conference announcing its new space downtown.

Research shows that the Millennials will decide where to live first and then look for a job, and the purpose of the project is to make Chicago top-of-mind when this decision is being made. Additionally, this demographic is insistent upon a work/life balance more so than previous generations. "Cooler by the Lake" proves that Chicago is an ideal place to find this balance.

Included in the CD is a wide range of information about living and working in Chicago, with everything from the top companies to work for, to the top bars and recreational sports leagues under the categories: Welcome to Chicago, Live Chicago, Work Chicago and Explore Chicago. It provides neighborhood guides, industry data for all key sectors and hyperlinks to cultural, business, recreational and dining institutions throughout the City.

This is the second digital media project aimed at this demographic produced by World Business Chicago. A previous version was distributed in September of 2001. WBC funded the project, with the assistance of a grant from the City of Chicago.

The CD was produced by Gameplan Creative, a Chicago-based global brand management company. Gameplan develops new product ideas for the sports and entertainment industries.

CareerBuilder HQ to Stay in Chicago

WBC recently worked with the City of Chicago and State of Illinois to retain the headquarters of the world's leading internet recruitment site, CareerBuilder LLC ("CareerBuilder"). The Chicago-based company has 25 locations and more than 2,200 employees nationwide, in addition to several international locations.

Explosive growth starting in 2003 led CareerBuilder to put employees in temporary locations around Chicago, awaiting a permanent location decision. CareerBuilder currently has 1,415 Chicago employees in four locations (which total approximately 220,000 square feet of office space). The company considered moving as many as 1,115 of these positions to Atlanta, Georgia and/or Phoenix, Arizona.

WBC helped CareerBuilder's executive team find good reason to stay in Chicago and narrow the cost differentials. Recently Chicago's Community Development Commission approved $2.9 million dollars in TIF funding and the State of Illinois promised over $13 million dollars in EDGE program funding. In turn, CareerBuilder will retain 1,415 jobs in the City of Chicago and grow an additional 185 jobs over the next 2 years, resulting in a 2010 payroll of approximately $105 million.

Under the chosen "Unified Chicago Headquarters" strategy, CareerBuilder will be anchored at several major Chicago locations: 200 N. LaSalle, 8420 W. Bryn Mawr, 1111 N. Canal and 180 N. LaSalle, with total office space equaling approximately 255,000 square feet. The company will also invest in improvements and infrastructure in those locations including expanding and renovating the 200 N. LaSalle facility, furnishing the facilities and upgrading the technology infrastructure.

The 200 N. LaSalle lease commitment and expansion will be among the largest financial commitments ever made by CareerBuilder, and preparing the facility will require a capital investment in excess of $11 million.

Careerbuilder is owned by the country's premier media companies including Microsoft, Gannett, Tribune and McClatchey. The global leader in online recruitment advertising, CareerBuilder serves clients ranging from Fortune 500 companies to small businesses in the United States and around the world. In 2006, the CareerBuilder Network had gross revenues in excess of $650 million.

The core of CareerBuilder's business model is technology-enabled sales professionals who sell online recruiting products and services presented from the CareerBuilder.com web-based platform. Sales professionals are supported by information technology, marketing, finance, accounting and executive leadership teams. Employees are typically college graduates; the company-wide average compensation is $67,000 a year.

WBC Board of Directors First Meeting for 2008

World Business Chicago's Board of Directors met on February 7 for the first meeting of 2008. In attendance were the Chairman of the Board Mayor Richard M. Daley, Co-Chair Michael O'Halleran, Executive Director Rita Athas, as well as various board members and WBC employees.

The call to order by O'Halleran was quickly followed by opening remarks by Mayor Daley. Guest speakers then presented on an array of topics: Doug Arnot, presenting a 2016 Olympic update; Michael Moskow citing the recommendations contained in the recently released "Global Edge Report"; John Thomson providing insight and a status report on the success of the Chicago China Economic Development Center; and Rosemarie Andolino from the Department of Aviation with a presentation on progress being made with the O'Hare Modernization Program.

Rita Athas closed the meeting with the presentation of WBC's first ever annual report, the "Cooler by the Lake" digital media project, and strategic initiatives for 2008. This was Athas's first board meeting since the transition in leadership from Paul O'Connor.

The meeting was hosted by Aon at the Aon Center at 200 E. Randolph in downtown Chicago. The next board meeting is slated for June 2008. We look forward to continuing our efforts with our board of directors and the business community to bring business to Chicago.

Footnotes
The new Chicago MSA (metropolitan statistical area) consists of a fourteen-county, tri-state region: Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties in Illinois; Jasper, Lake, Newton, and Porter counties in Indiana; and Kenosha County in Wisconsin. The December 2007 Employment numbers are preliminary only. The Producer Price Index figures for 2007 are preliminary only. The office absorption and availability rate are 2007 fourth quarter numbers for the downtown Chicago market. Data is from CB Richard Ellis. Net Absorption is the change in available space in square feet. Availability rate is space that is currently vacant or in the process of being marketed. Consumer confidence, automobile and truck sales are U.S. numbers. The Chicago Midwest Manufacturing Index is a monthly estimate of manufacturing output in the 7th Federal Reserve district (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, and Wisconsin). It is a composite index of sixteen manufacturing industries that use electrical power and hours worked data to measure monthly changes in regional activity. The employment, housing, and net absorption numbers are listed in thousands.
